Warner Brothers Television uses MediaXstream Managed Workflow Services to manage its Smallville Digital Dailies process.

Eight seasons of Digital Dailies using MediaXstream Managed Workflow Services

Smallville, a CW show, is the modern retelling of the Superman legend and its classic characters. The producers blend realism, action and emotional depth to reveal a new interpretation of the enduring mythology. Now entering its 9th season, the show continues to enjoy critical and commercial success.

Business challenge:

Warner Brothers Television and Deluxe need to marry remote shooting and post functions in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, with the editing and approval functions in Burbank, California.

For television serials, production is all about delivering product on-time, every-time. That means producers, post-supervisors, editors and studio executives in Burbank are focused on workflow control and production deadlines. As a result, the director and crew in Vancouver need to balance creative needs, quality and show costs with delivering the product on schedule.

That’s a tall order if the show is relying on the “Fish Flight” everyday between Vancouver to Los Angeles. An additional day of lag time is needed to distribute review dailies on VHS and DVD media as well as edit dailies on hard drives. Quality and data integrity risks are elevated due to the need to compensate for the transportation of physical media.

MediaXstream Solution:

Warner Brothers Television uses MediaXstream Managed Workflow Services to manage its Smallville Digital Dailies process. MediaXstream connects disparate elements of the workflow seamlessly between the Vancouver and Burbank production teams using network connectivity, content and format orchestration techniques for play list assembly, and a non-linear Digital Dailies player application.

Collaboration between Vancouver and Burbank and back again is accelerated in a tightly managed closed loop that includes the director, producers, writers, editors, and post-supervisors. MediaXstream Managed Workflow Serivices eliminate the additional day of lag time without sacrificing creative quality or risking data integrity.

Outcome: Better product.

Accelerating collaboration in the workflow using MediaXstream managed network connectivity enables Warner Brothers Television to streamline play list assembly and deliver rough cuts faster (often the same day as shooting). This immediately helps the director with quality and continuity issues for episode revision. Longer term, this supports more productive review sessions and improves the creative writing process for storyline development, foreshadowing, and episode creation. MediaXstream Managed Workflow Services is a critical element helping the Smallville production team create better product season after season.

ideal choice for our high volume, high quality secure traffic. Hibernia`s team
of network professionals understands our content requirements and continues to
provide innovative network solutions for us.”

“Our two companies share the same common interest,” continues Bjarni
customers with the best quality of service. With this in mind, MediaXstream
provides a managed service in DTM (Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode), an
optical transport technology, to efficiently control the transport of video
content. Simply stated, MediaXstream operates dedicated media networks and
offers media-centric solutions developed for video and broadcast companies.
MediaXstream and Hibernia Atlantic now bridge high quality DTM service between
North America and Europe to seamlessly interconnect broadcasters and media
enterprises on both continents. We look forward to supporting MediaXstream as
they continue to emerge in this booming marketplace.”

San Jose, California – April 7, 2008. MediaXstream, Inc., a new venture that provides carrier-neutral, high quality transport and managed network services for the production and broadcast industries, today announced the launch of commercial operations. Contribution quality video signals from event venues in 17 major markets can now be transported to regional and national broadcasters for redistribution to consumer audiences.

Led by Del Bothof as President and CEO, the management team is a highly experienced group of industry veterans recognized in the production and broadcast media marketplace. Using state-of-the-art optical switching and Dynamic Transport Mode (DTM) technologies, MediaXstream’s service platform is ideal for customers who generate and manage media content. “The network is specifically designed and built to deliver customer solutions for media,” said Wayne Price, CTO MediaXstream. Customers can specify optimized solutions for contribution quality collection of content and forward distribution of content between businesses engaged in production and broadcast. “Customer service is our number one objective in Operations and that’s the reflected in the way we built and operate the Television Operating Center,” according to Wes Hanemayer, Vice President Operations MediaXstream.

A true high definition viewing experience starts with delivering a dedicated contribution quality signal to producers and broadcasters. “Multi-service public and commodity IP platforms are not optimized to drive the high definition viewing experience demanded by the marketplace,” said Del Bothof, CEO MediaXstream. “We are building a portfolio of contribution quality business-to-business services so producers and broadcasters can deliver the images that cameras actually see.”
Cliff Friedman, Chairman of the Board MediaXstream, added “We are focused on capturing a strategic inflection point in the market between media, communications and technology. Bringing together digital media technologies with a company like MediaXstream creates an industry platform for content creators to innovate programming services economically.”

Additionally, MediaXstream was formed in partnership with AboveNet Communications, Inc and Hibernia Atlantic US LLC; media savvy companies capable of investing the resources and assets necessary to build an international network footprint suitable for the needs of the production and broadcast industries.

North America to London and Dublin, and further extends MediaXstream

Telecom Ramblings, March 3, 2009

Video network specialist MediaXstream has chosen Hibernia Atlantic for its transatlantic capacity requirements. The deal is for multiple diverse 10Gbps wavelengths from North America to London and Dublin, and further extends MediaXstream’s young DTM video network such that it can serve customers with European needs. And who is MediaXstream? That’s a question I asked myself, until I ran into a familiar name in its CEO Del Bothof.

Bothof, telecom and broadcast infrastructure followers surely recall, was the head of Wiltel’s Vyvx for years, after which he resurfaced at Broadwing and spearheaded the development of their DTM video network. Both of course became part of Level 3 Communications (LVLT: chart, news), and I had wondered what happened to both Del Bothof and the Broadwing DTM network but never followed up. Well now I know - roughly a year ago he got started with MediaXstream which apparently hit the ground running. Their network happens to look a heck of a lot like the video network he built for Broadwing - it’s even managed out of a NOC in Baltimore. I’m curious about the circumstances, I’m guessing Level 3 didn’t continue with the DTM plans so Bothof picked up the ball and ran with it, but I don’t really know. Anybody?

The pairing makes a lot of sense for both Hibernia and MediaXstream. The northern transatlantic route has low latency which is vital to the delivery of HD video feeds to Europe, and Hibernia’s unique footprint on both continents allows them to handle the on and off ramps as well.
